In 2008 I was considering buying a C5 or C6 Corvette. However I wanted something unique, so I bought this M3 and swapped an LS1 with T56 into it. After 8k miles I pulled the LS1 out, bought a bare LS2 block and built it from the ground up with a dry sump. It lasted until it ate some valve train parts at 2k miles. I rebuilt the LS2 a second time and it's currently running strong. I've owned the car for 21 years since I was 15 and selected the MG because my uncle had one and it left an impression on 8 year old me. I pulled the stock engine and put in a 12a rotary i got from a local car club member for free. I blew up several rear ends before deciding the stock MG running gear was not up to task and new parts were in order. I'm a Mechanical Engineer and did the chassis/suspension/pretty much everything design on the U of I FSAE car my senior year and decided that the MG needed some race car DNA injected. I went off the deep end and cut away the bodywork and have built a tube frame. The car uses Miata uprights/brakes and Diff with a custom geometry pushrod suspension using Motorcycle shocks based loosly around the FSAE car I designed. Engine is a Street Port 13b I purchased running MS that was featured in GRM when the MS install was completed at the Mitty. The track width is stock NA Miata which requires some fairly substantial flares to cover the tires. This has been a very long term build (12+ years) as I started when I lived in Wisconsin with 0 kids and now live in Il with 2 kids. I have documented the build extensively on both GRM and LocostUSA forums and along the way shared techniques I've used to fabricate the car. The car is entirely fabricated with basic shop tools that the average carguy could accumulate. The Flares are steel and were hand bent using a log without use of a shrinker/stretcher. For every challenge on the car I looked for the solution that I could implement on my own with minimal reliance on sourced parts. The car is very much the definition of Built not Bought. The car has been running for 2 years and has racked up about 5 hours of track time, 200+ Autox runs, and 500 street miles. The car is reliable, with a strong overbuilt chassis, neutral handling and good high speed stability. The car draws attention wherever it goes and has been nicknamed the "Death Metal Midget" as the flares are unfinished, stich welded on, and carry the real patina of 6 years of fabrication. I know the car won't be on the pointy end of the field at UTCC but to be able to have the car I built from an Idea in my head share the track with the amazing machines that show up would be the ultimate goal for the project. I've ran the car in the intermediate/advanced lapping groups at trackdays and have been on pace with C5 Z06, 997 911's and similar cars (Grattan 1:30.5).
